Historical Fiction

I love writing historical fiction because I'm interested in working out how things happened; whether it's a battle, the collapse of a culture, the rise of a philosophy. And let's face it; I love to do research. I love to walk an archaeological site, or an ancient battlefield, with a couple of texts in hand trying to work out what really happened. Also, I'm a 'method actor' as a writer; I want to try all the things. I want to ride bareback, wear the clothes, eat the food, see what they say, feel what they felt. I'll add to that an idea. I think history matters. And I think that all history matters; not just British or Scottish or European history.

While writing Rage of Ares I spent hours at the Battlefield of Plataea (days, really). There is no substitute for seeing the real thing.
